Philosophical fiction wasn't precisely new. Plato's dialogues ended up embedded in fictional narratives and his Republic is an early illustration of a Utopia. Ibn Tufail's twelfth century Philosophus Autodidacticus with its story of the human outcast surviving on an island, plus the 13th century reaction by Ibn al-Nafis, Theologus Autodidactus are
